Optical Encoder Dual Reader
This patent pending technology provides unimaginable resolution of better than 2 nanoradians while enhancing phase resolution and eliminating drift. (Model HR-3 only)
Second Generation Magnetic Thrust Bearing
Patented design with improved low torque performance and mapping stability. With less than 70% of the friction of air-bearings, it can measure down to 0.5 nNm of torque. Inherently more robust and not susceptible to contamination compared to air-bearings. Patent # 7,137, 290 &
Advanced Drag Cup Motor
The DHR incorporates our redesigned & patented drag cup motor, with digital current control for more stable torque output and minimal drift. The DHR motor provides extremely smooth acceleration, the fastest step strain and step rate response, and keeps inertia, temperature, and friction to an absolute minimum. Patent #
Normal Force Rebalance Transducer
The DHR combines popular force rebalance transducer, or FRT, technology with the world’s most advanced single-head Rheometer for zero compliance highly accurate normal force measurements up to 50N.
New True Position Sensor (TPS)
Patent-pending technology provides true gap accuracy via a high resolution linear position sensor that makes real-time gap corrections for movement due to thermal expansion. Works with all smart SWAP geometries and environmental systems.
Active Temperature Control (ATC)
Patented technology enables wireless temperature measurements across an air gap in non-contact systems. With ATC, the actual upper plate temperature is known rather than inferred, making real-time control of both plates possible. The benefits are faster temperature response, true temperature ramp capability, and elimination of complex calibration procedures and offset tables. Patent #
Color Display
Color Display
Displays a variety of information to the test station to facilitate sample loading and viewing of real-time information during experiments.
Smart SWAP geometries
Smart SWAP geometries
Features patented Smart Swap geometries. When attached, the information is automatically read and the software is configured with appropriate parameters (type, dimension, material).

Smart SWAP temperature systems and options
Smart SWAP temperature systems and options
Smart SWAP options are attached to the instrument on its unique magnetic base and automatically detected and configured for operation in less than 10 seconds.
Intuitive Touch Keypad
Intuitive Touch Keypad
A robust, intuitive keypad inspires simple interaction by placing the most important rheometer functions at your fingertips. Available functions include: gap zero, trim gap, go to gap, raise and lower head, start and stop tests. The keypad employs a rugged, sealed design that resists even the most aggressive solvents, providing worry-free operation in any environment.
Single-Piece Casting and Liner Slide
Single-Piece Casting and Liner Slide
New single-piece aluminum casting and rugged linear ball slide configuration reduces torsional and axial compliance by 60% over traditional designs. A micro stepper motor and linear optical encoder ensure precision positioning of the geometry with a resolution of 0.02 microns. The open design provides ease of access and ample space for sample loading and trimming.
World’s Most Versatile Platform for Rheological Measurements
All DHR temperature systems and accessories are designed with superior performance and ease-of-use in mind. Only TA Instruments’ DHR offers the convenience and versatility of Smart Swap geometries, temperature systems, and accessories. Smart Swap technologies provide fast and easy interchanging of accessories and automatic detection and configuration of the rheometer for operation.
Why is it called a Hybrid Rheometer?
We’ve taken powerful technology from the ARES-G2 and combined it with the core of our best selling AR products. Add in patented and patent-pending new technologies and TA has created the world’s most powerful and versatile rheometer platform.
Who should buy and who will benefit?
In a word everyone! New users will obtain a powerful platform that’s easy to use. User’s of competitive equipment will enjoy a more reliable and versatile platform, capable of performing a wider range of experiments on their samples. Existing TA users will appreciate the enhanced performance specifications, new features, powerful new TRIOS software, and a seamless transition to the new technology..
What's new with the Discovery Hybrid Rheometer?
The DHR rheometers represent the latest technical breakthroughs from TA Instruments, they include:
- Second generation magnetic bearing with 0.5 nN.m torque
- Force rebalance transducer technology for Normal Force Measurements
- Patent pending optical encoder dual-reader technology with unprecedented resolution to two nanoradians.
- Redesigned and patented new motor with non-contact temperature sensor, and active cooling for the most accurate torque control and measurements.
- Patent pending True Position Sensor (TPS) for real-time gap corrections
- Color display and capacitive touch keypad for easy instrument interaction
- New TRIOS Software
What are the main differences between AR-Series Rheometers and the new DHR?
The DHR rheometers replace all current AR Series models. All three rheometers include magnetic bearing technology, True position Sensor (TPS), Smart Swap temperature systems, Smart Swap geometries, active temperature control (ATC), FRT normal force control, and TRIOS software.
Can I use my existing geometries on a new DHR?
All Smart Swap geometries, previously available on the AR-G2 only, are compatible with new DHR rheometers.
Can I use my existing AR-Series Smart Swap environment system or accessories on the DHR?
All Smart Swap temperature systems and options are compatible with the new DHR rheometer with the exception of two. The Environmental Test Chamber (ETC) and Electrically Heated Plate (EHP) have been redesigned to accommodate the new ultra-low compliance frame design. However, ETC and EHP manifolds and Smart Swap geometries are compatible with the DHR.
Can I read my Rheology Advantage files in TRIOS software?
Yes. AR Series experimental files can be opened in the new TRIOS software to allow for data viewing and analysis.
How much should I budget for the DHR rheometer?
Despite all of the new features and patented new technology, DHR systems are priced about the same as our previous generation AR products. There are three different models available (HR-1, HR-2, HR-3), for expert assistance configuring a system that fits your laboratory’s needs; contact your local Sales Representative.
